We coordinate targeted mould and moisture investigations for properties across Newcastle and the greater Hunter Region. Our process is not just about confirming visible mould, it’s about diagnosing the underlying moisture source and identifying the specific fungal species present to create an effective remediation plan. We understand the unique challenges of our local building stock, from rising damp in historic Cooks Hill terrace houses to trapped humidity in the sub-floors of Merewether weatherboard homes.

Newcastle Home

Our IICRC-certified technicians use testing to build a complete picture of a property’s indoor environment. This data is critical for pre-purchase due diligence, resolving tenant disputes, or providing evidence for an insurance claim following a water damage event.

Our Scientific Mould & Moisture Analysis Process

We follow the IICRC S520 standard for professional mould remediation, which begins with a thorough, evidence-based assessment. Our testing is not a standalone service but an integrated part of a complete diagnostic protocol.

Surface Testing

When visible or suspected mould is present, we take surface samples to identify the genus and species. This is particularly important for differentiating between more common allergenic moulds like Cladosporium and potentially toxigenic species like Stachybotrys chartarum, which requires sustained moisture to grow.

Moisture Testing

We use calibrated moisture meters and hygrometers to map moisture content within building materials like plasterboard and timber. This helps us find hidden water sources behind walls and under floors, which is a common issue in local properties, especially during periods of high humidity.

Air Sampling

To assess indoor air quality and detect hidden mould sources, we use air sampling cassettes. This method captures airborne spores and provides a clear comparison between indoor spore counts and the natural outdoor environment. elevated indoor levels of species like Aspergillus or Penicillium often indicate an internal contamination source.

Common Mould Scenarios We Investigate in Newcastle

Our team is regularly called to properties across the Hunter Region facing specific, localised issues.

Coastal Homes in Merewether & Bar Beach

We often find corrosion and moisture ingress caused by salt air, leading to mould growth around window frames and in wardrobes. The constant coastal humidity makes these homes particularly vulnerable.

Heritage Properties in Hamilton & Newcastle East

Older brick and terrace homes can suffer from rising damp where the original damp-proof course has failed, causing moisture and salt to leach into walls and creating conditions for mould.

Newer Builds in Fletcher & Cameron Park

In newer constructions, mould issues are frequently linked to construction moisture that was inadequately dried out, or poor ventilation design in modern, sealed homes.

Post-Flood Remediation in Wallsend

Following heavy rainfall or flooding events common to the Newcastle area, we provide post-remediation verification testing to ensure clearance has been successfully achieved.

Understanding Your NATA-Accredited Lab Results

We do not interpret our own samples. All surface and air samples are sent under strict chain-of-custody protocols to a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accredited laboratory for independent analysis.

You will receive a copy of the official laboratory report, which identifies the mould species found and their concentration levels. We then provide a clear, plain-language explanation of what the results mean for your property and your health, outlining the specific steps required for remediation based on the scientific data.

Mould Testing FAQs

Does mould testing tell me if the mould is toxic?

The lab analysis identifies the species, including those known to be toxigenic like Stachybotrys chartarum (“black mould”). While the presence of these species indicates a potential health risk that requires priority remediation, testing does not measure mycotoxin levels directly.

How long until I get my results?

On-site moisture and visual inspection findings are available immediately. Laboratory analysis for air and surface samples typically takes 3-5 business days, at which point we will provide you with the full report and our recommendations.

Do I need testing if I can already see mould?

If the mould is isolated and the source is obvious (e.g., a small patch under a leaking sink), you may not need testing. However, testing is highly recommended when mould is widespread, a musty odour persists with no visible source, for post-remediation verification, or for any real estate, legal, or insurance purpose.
